LE ROCQUIER SCHOOL PTA Chairman’s Report for 2018/2019

I am pleased to be able to report another successful year for your PTA, with the hard-working Committee having - on your behalf – not only once again raised significant funds, but also provided much-needed contributions to school-related activities/projects (referred to below, and of which further details appear in the Annual Accounts).

The big news is that the our PTA is one of the first organisations in Jersey to be granted the status of a ‘Charity’ under the Charities (Jersey) Law 2014! [Registered Charity No. 31].  We hope to be able to attract major sponsorship in due course in order to be even better placed to support the school.

Meanwhile, Car Boot Sales continue to be the PTA’s main source of income. We have maintained the ‘first-Saturday-of-the-month’ (and extra mid-Summer month events) programme and the £10 pitch price still represents good value given that the large tarmacked site is flat and level and there’s plenty of customer car parking, with toilet facilities immediately adjacent.  The weather on Car Boot Sale Saturdays has, once again, been variable with a number of mid-summer days - when fine weather might have been expected - turning out to be less than favourable!  As ever, no events were cancelled, but a few were ‘abandoned’ due to a lack of stallholders because of forecast poor weather (although this didn’t always materialise)!  We have lots of ‘regular customers’ - many of whom have become ‘friends’ of the school - who are keen to participate in what is, in effect, a great form of recycling.  So why not come along and run a pitch yourself?

PTA Car Boot Sales cease once the winter months arrive with the last one of the year held at the beginning of October, after which we take a break from Car Boot Sales until the Spring of 2020 - hopefully the first Saturday of either February or March - weather permitting.  However, we are still working hard on your behalf, as you will see from the note below about the forthcoming “Race and Live Music Night” (to be held on Friday 18th October 2018); and also the ever-popular “Christmas Bingo” pencilled-in for Friday, 29th November!

A big “thank you” from me goes to all Committee members for their efforts in supporting the School.  In particular, the Committee is indebted to our Secretary – Lisa Howkins – and to our Treasurer – Jenny Richardson – without both of whom the PTA just could not function!  We continue to have the benefit of parents of current and former students, as well as a number of members of the School’s teaching staff.  In particular, I am grateful to Vice-Chairman Stewart Elston for his long-standing support and encouragement, particularly in respect of Car Boot Sales and Race Nights. Thanks must also go to the School’s senior management team and all the staff at the School for their continued efforts towards your children’s education.

By way of assisting the School’s good work, the PTA continues to provide funding for projects which might not otherwise have secured money from the normal budgetary process. For the year 2018/2019, the PTA has made the following contributions –

  • £500 Diana Award Anti-Bullying Campaign;
  • £120 Pastoral Curriculum Support;
  • £1,000 contribution towards 3-D printer;
  • £1,928 contribution towards a Food Preparation Area and Pantry Development;
  • and also a contribution of £100 towards the Grouville School ‘Forest Meadow Project’.

The work of the PTA is all clearly to the benefit of the students and the School and, although it could not have been done without the PTA Committee, it also requires support from YOU, the parents and friends of Le Rocquier School. There is much you can do to help. As well as attending functions, parents and friends can also support the school by participating in the various ongoing schemes, such as donating items for the second-hand uniform ‘Shop’; donating prizes for our raffles throughout the year; joining the 100 Club (monthly draws – see below*); and by using the PTA’s own C.I. Co-Operative Society account number (313660) – even if only occasionally.

A 100 Club is run every School Year and the PTA’s thanks goes to Samantha Ennis, our 100 Club Co-ordinator.  With membership at only £12 for the year, this is a great way of supporting the School!  [* Don’t forget that it’s still not too late to join the 2019/2020 100 Club - and you could win a prize of £50 at the A.G.M, not to mention the possibility of £100 just before Christmas – see below!]

As referred to above, a Race and Live Music Night is planned for Friday, 18th October 2019 at The Ambassadeur Hotel, St. Clement’s Coast Road, starting at 7.30pm.  Tickets for this ‘meal in a basket’ event – priced at only £15 – are now on sale from Stewart Elston, the School office and at PTA events.

Additionally, the 2019 ‘Christmas Bingo’ is set to take place on the 29th November.  Doors will be open from 6.00 p.m. for a prompt start at 6.30 p.m.  All are welcome and, in order to attract as many players as possible, the big prize game will guarantee a total of least £50 for the winners - and it could be even more, because the more people that take part the bigger the prizes will be!  There’s no entrance charge, so do please tell all your friends, neighbours and relations, and get them to pass the word around about the free entry and that Le Rocquier School is the place to be* for Christmas Bingo!  [* And doubly-so because the Bingo event will probably also be used to draw the magnificent December 100 Club prize of £100!  100 Club membership will be on sale during the evening so why not come along and get yourself and the family another number or more for extra chances to win!].

I urge you, please, to support the School and the PTA, and help to give all students at Le Rocquier School the best that can be provided.

Further information is available on the PTA page on the School website or use our contact form on this website or through Facebook: lereocquierPTA We look forward to seeing you all at future events.
